Dan terkutuklah selama-lamanya Sang Kapten bersama para anak kapalnya itu menjadi jasad hidup dan berlayar di tujuh lautan untuk selama-lamanya. Konon, Kapal tersebut dikutuk untuk melayari 7 samudera sampai akhir zaman. lalu cerita itu menyebar sangat cepat ke seluruh dunia.
Sumber lain juga menyebutkan munculnya penyakit berbahaya di kalangan awak kapal sehingga mereka tidak diijinkan untuk berlabuh dipelabuhan manapun . Sejak itu, kapal dan awaknya dihukum untuk selalu berlayar, tidak pernah berlabuh/menepi. Menurut beberapa versi, ini terjadi pada tahun 1641, yang lain menebak tahun 1680 atau 1729. Terneuzen (Belanda) disebut sebagai rumah sang legenda Flying Dutchman, Van der Decken, seorang kapten yang mengutuk Tuhan dan telah dihukum untuk mengarungi lautan selamanya, telah diceritakan dalam novel karya Frederick Marryat – The Phantom Ship dan Richard Wagner opera. Banyak saksi yang mengaku telah melihat kapal hantu ini. Pada tahun 1939 kapal ini terlihat di Mulkzenberg.
